Become a Walk Leader
Volunteering and Training
Volunteering with Cardiff Walking for Health gives you the opportunity to:
- Meet new people in your community.
- Share your experience and knowledge.
- Learn new skills.
- Explore your local area and green spaces.
What does being a Walk Leader Involve?
Each of our Walking for Health walks requires a walk leader and a back leader to support the slower participants.
The three principle tasks involved in being a walk leader are:-
- Recording of a register of walkers at each walk.
- The collection of a health questionnaire in respect of new walkers.
- The preparation, when planning a walk, of a risk assessment.
Training is offered to prepare volunteers for leading a walk or other tasks. The one-day training course is free to volunteers and a manual and accreditation certificate is also issued to those who undertake the training. A basic first aid course is also provided for those who have no recent first aid training.
Potential volunteers are invited to go on a health walk to get a feel for the issues concerned before the actual training day.
It is clear that there is a commitment involved in leading or supporting a walk and new walks are being planned with the idea of recruiting several potential walk leaders in each case, to enable a rota to be set up. Reliability and punctuality are the most important qualities of a good walk leader!
Do you want to be involved?
You can contribute in a variety of ways and time commitment is flexible.
If you are interested please see the Contact Us page on how to get in touch.
If you don’t think you can commit to being a Walk Leader but would still like to volunteer to help with Cardiff ’s Walking for Health scheme, there are still a number of roles you can help with, such as route planners and assessors of walks, or general support to walkers.
